 St. James Anglican Church

St. James Anglican Church is noted for its friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We take the good news seriously, but our work together is joyful and productive. We are highly invested in helping the world to be a healthy, compassionate home for everyone. We have been given awards for the “greening” of our physical plant. With the Grand River rushing by our Butterfly Garden, it would be difficult to ignore our responsibility for creation. We also care passionately about our relationships with other people. We constantly seek to understand the issues of our era, whether those issues are local, national or global. In 2017, we have committed ourselves to learning about and lifting up First Nations communities and their struggles and gifts. We have an ongoing relationship with three communities in Swaziland — Pilgrims Hope, Sgwenyama, and Mbhevetane — and a team from St. James visits them annually. In the city of Centre Wellington, we are involved in actively supporting social justice activities and planning groups.

This justice centred, hopeful attitude carries itself into our worship which blends the best of traditional Anglican worship with modern music, language and preaching themes. The emphasis at St. James is in living out our lives as followers of Jesus, as adherents of his teachings about relationships, and in opening ourselves to the promptings of the Spirit as it transforms lives with creativity and compassion.

We love to see children in church and have a children's programme Sunday mornings during the school year. Our youth are involved in worship, in leadership, and in diocesan activities. Our seniors bring their wisdom, but they are also the first to suggest innovative ideas and to encourage us in our faith and life outside the church buildings.

We experience our faith as privilege and promise that life can be lived in abundance by everyone, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or circumstance. Through prayer, through action, and through love, we believe that we can be part of the healing of the earth.
