 Thought for the week

“Being a Christian is not essentially about joining a church or being a nice person,

but about following in the footsteps of Jesus, taking his teachings seriously,

letting his Spirit take the lead in our lives,

and in so doing helping to change the world from our nightmare into God’s dream.”

Michael Curry, Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus

Winter Newsletter: Please pass any items for our winter newsletter to Angela Mullins by Sunday, December 8th.

What does Advent mean for you? Is it mostly a time of shopping and cooking and decorating and overwhelming busyness, in preparation for the arrival of the big event, Christmas Day? Or can it be, however briefly, a time of quiet contemplation for you each day; of waiting for the arrival of a baby we call Jesus, the Christ?

In this year’s PWRDF Advent devotions, four theologians and writers offer unique reflections as they connect the Advent themes of hope, peace, joy and love, to their ministries:

•    Hope - The Rev. Laurel Dykstra on Creation Care
•    Peace - The Rt. Rev. John Hannen on Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples
•    Joy - Dr. Marion Taylor on Empowering Women
•    Love - Dr. Mary Jo Leddy on Refugees

Out of their lived experience, their work and their understandings of scripture, they offer us a rich variety of ways to contemplate the one for whom we wait. Each reflection is linked to a PWRDF story to connect this time of waiting with the ‘work’ of waiting that we are called to do; the work of creating – in the words of our vision statement – “a truly just, peaceful and healthy world.”
May you wait in quiet contemplation this Advent season.

Click here to sign up to receive reflections starting November 30th.

PWRDF World of Gifts 2019 campaign has begun. The items offered have been selected based on the needs of people participating in the many programs supported by PWRDF. Whether it be clean water, climate adaptation and food security, health or Indigenous programs, your gift is an opportunity to make a world of difference. Click here to visit the online store.

Our Christmas Marketplace will take place on Saturday, November 30th. There’s a basket in the Narthex to drop off any new items for our Christmas baskets. With just 2 weeks for donations to be accepted, we require women’s or men’s accessories, baby girl or boy items, teen items, kitchen items, specialty teas or coffee, pet items etc. Or, if you care to donate money, please pass it to Nancy Fletcher and she’ll purchase items to fill the baskets. Thank you.

Rechurch Revisited is a one-day conference, Saturday, November 23, 2019 (9am-4pm) at St. James Dundas, where lay and clergy leaders of our diocese can gather to learn about, engage with, and grow from an encounter with leaders from local pioneering ministries. We will explore our common foundations, inspire hope for what God is doing in our churches, and give permission to dream and to move with the Spirit. This conference will provide a sacred space to begin to look outwards, envision ministry in the new contexts we find ourselves and to develop practical next steps for our ministry. Barbara Clunes and Rev’d Ann will be attending and we hope others in our parish might be interested. Please contact the office if you would like to attend!

Bishop's Company Fall Reception: You are cordially invited by Bishop Susan Bell to attend a special wine and cheese reception for members and friends of the Bishop’s Company! This fall reception will be held on Friday, November 29th at Christ’s Church Cathedral. Please visit this website to reserve your place! The Bishop’s Company raises much needed discretionary funding to compassionately and strategically respond to the emergent needs of our diocesan leaders, lay and ordained. For more information about the Bishop’s Company, click here.
